Short, smooth coat

Beagles, boxers, dachshunds, French bulldogs, most mixed breeds with a close coat. The skin is the thing here, not the hair. A gentle wash every six to eight weeks, wipes for folds and paws in between, balm for noses that dry out. Conditioner is unnecessary; a detangling mist is not needed.

Long or silky coat

Cavaliers, spaniels, setters, Yorkshire terriers, Maltese. Tangles form as the coat dries, so the conditioner and the mist do more than the shampoo. Comb through while damp after every wash and mist before brushing between washes.

Double coat

Golden retrievers, huskies, German shepherds, Pomeranians, corgis. A dense undercoat that repels water and traps moisture. Wet to the skin, rinse for longer than feels necessary, dry completely. The conditioner helps the comb through the undercoat during shedding seasons.

Curly or woolly coat

Poodles, doodles, bichons, Portuguese water dogs. Coats that mat rather than shed, and that hold water. Conditioner and mist are the everyday tools; the groomer's clippers are the backstop. Ears with hair in the canal need regular cleaning.

Wire coat

Schnauzers, most terriers, wire-haired dachshunds. Wash less often than you think; the harsh texture is the point. A mild shampoo, no conditioner, paws and beard wiped after walks.

Sensitive skin, any coat

Itching, flaking or reactions to other products. Fewer products, no fragrance, longer between washes, and a vet's opinion before anything else if the skin is red or broken.

Cats, short coat

British Shorthairs, domestic shorthairs. Almost never needs washing. A no-rinse foam for the occasions a cat cannot manage alone, wipes for paws and litter dust, balm for a dry nose in winter.

Cats, long coat

Persians, Maine Coons, Ragdolls. Daily combing is the whole routine. A mist on a dry coat makes it possible; the foam handles greasy patches without a bath.
